One of my co-workers sent along this Mother Jones’ article, “I Can’t Stop Reading One-Star Yelp Reviews of National Parks“. (Sidenote: I recently started a consulting gig at a local sustainability organization but am still actively growing Green Philly Company.) 

So I decided to dig and see what local (sustainable) Philly gems also had one star reviews. I found a few interesting things: The best comments were usually around 2-3 stars, but they still had similar comments in integrity to the national parks 1-star. (I suppose Philly people rate their attractions higher? Perhaps it’s our inferiority complex.)

Here are the highlights of Yelp.

1. Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens – Isaiah Zagar

Honorable mention, two stars:

“Keep in mind that this review is written from the perspective of someone who does not frequent places like art museums to people who don’t love arts. That said…

Your friends will tell you about Magic Gardens and how it’s an amazing experience. Eventually convince you drag your feet over to South Street and pay $7. I’m here to tell you that if you don’t appreciate abstract arts and don’t enjoy spending time staring at something you could just as easily see online, don’t go”

Um, you know that appreciating art is part of what makes the visit worthwhile. Right?

2. Shofuso Japanese House & Garden

People understand the point is to see the gardens, amiright?! 

3. Washington Square Park

“Eh. This place is OK.”

4. Fairmount Park

“If not for the obnoxious bikers.”

5. Schuylkill River Dog Run

“If you live in walking distance, it would be great.” (Isn’t that the point?!?)
