5K Run for Clean Air is 32 in Philly – Win a FREE Entry!

5K Run for Clean AirDo you enjoy running, especially away from the exhaust pipes of cars and traffic?

Come out for a 5K to support breathing healthy, clean air in sustainable neighborhoods and our region’s overall health.

The Clean Air Council’s 5K Run for Clean Air is the Philadelphia’s largest Earth Day Celebration. This year, the 32nd annual run is coming up on April 20th at 9 AM on MLK drive next to the Philadelphia Art Museum. The 5K Run for Clean Air is a certified-green run and zero-waste event, complete with outdoor waste bin stations with trash, composting and recycling sections.

New in 2013, a Kids’ Fun Run has been added as a 1/2 mile sprint for children ages 5-12, and a 250 yard dash for kids under 5. “This family friendly day is an opportunity for the region to celebrate spring, support the environment, and promote exercise,” said Gretchen Dahlkemper Alfonso, Mom’s Clean Air Force Field Director. “There is something for every fitness level: a competitive 5K run, an enjoyable 3K walk, and now a Kids’ Fun Run.

Also new in 2013 will be the location of the celebration at the art museum steps including exhibitors, activities, food & fun. Plus, participants age 60 and over can receive a free registration fee (thanks to sponsor SCA).

Want to participate in next Saturday’s 5K Run for Clean Air? We’re giving away a few race entries. You can win by taking these 2 brief steps:

1. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus or Pinterest and tell us which action you took in the comments below. (If you are already a fan of every social media network you’re on, just say so.)

2. Provide an answer to one of these 5 questions in your comment:

a. How many wind farms exist currently in Pennsylvania?

b. How many monthly weather records for heat, rain and snow were shattered in 2012?

c. How much does an average SEPTA passenger offset his or her commute-related carbon footprint by using public transit?

d. What percent of people in the US live in areas with unhealthful levels of ozone?

e.  How many visits to the emergency room is asthma responsible for each year?

Once all 5 questions are answered correctly, we will draw a few more names for a free race entry.

  1. I am following via Google Plus.

According to the 2012 American Lung Association State of the Air report, 41% in the United States live in counties that have unhealthful levels of either ozone or particle pollution.

  2. And an average of 8.23 lbs of carbon are offset per ride using SEPTA transportation!

  3. 41% of people live in counties in the U.S. w/ unhealthful levels of ozone or particle pollution .. and asthma results in nearly 2 million visits to the emergency room each year (4,700 per day!). At least all the questions are now answered.

  4. I’d love an entry, please. I follow you on FB and Twitter. I read all Rachel’s answers and am ready to do my part to take action for clean air.

  5. I like you guys on Facebook and Twitter. We’ll take the train down and offset the 8+ pounds of carbon versus driving if you can let me know the best way to get from center city to the starting point for the race.

  6. Hi Zachariah –

    You could either:
    a) Take the train to Suburban Station and walk to the start line. (Bonus! More calories burned!)
    b) Take the 38 bus from Suburban to Art Museum Drive & Kelly Drive (or as close as you’d like).

Hope you enjoy the run! 🙂
