9 Safe Driving & Biking Tips as Philly Celebrates International Bike to School Day

Philly’s a stellar bike commuting (to work) city, but it’s important that we start these skills young!

Today (May 4th) is ‘International Bike to School Day’ to encourage safe riding to school. As you fine readers know, we support & encourage safe riding EVERY day.

However, Philly’s got a few things in place already. Local initiative by the Bicycle CoalitionSafe Routes Philly” helps students learn safe commuting habits by walking and cycling to school.

The city released a few tips for drivers & bikers to stay safe, which we repeated below.

DRIVING SAFETY TIPS:

  • Slow down, speed matters! Remember, in school zones, thespeed limit is 15 mph when the lights on the school zone sign are flashing or during the time period indicated on signs.
  • Pay attention! Put down your cell phone and other distractions in order to focus on driving safe.
  • Watch for small children, especially when turning or backing up.
  • Be courteous and predictable around all who bike and walk, especially children.

BIKING SAFETY TIPS:

  • Protect your head. Wear a helmet.
  • Make some noise so people can hear you! Use a bell or whistle.
  • Be seen. Install lights on the front and back of your bike. And remember to wear bright, reflective clothing, especially when biking at night.
  • Stop, look, and listen before crossing the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to be sure they see you.

Readers, what tips do you have for bikers & drivers alike? Tell us in the comments.
