EV chargers are popping up at Wawa, Sheetz & other statewide locations

It’s getting easier to go electric in the commonwealth.

Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations are popping up across Pennsylvania due to $2.2 million from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) grant programs.

EVgo is installing 36 DC fast charging plugs, including four at the Wawa on 3901 Aramingo Avenue. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the new charging site yesterday with DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell; Vincent Cipollone, Director of Retail Fuels, Wawa; Christine Knapp, Director of the Office of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia; and Ted Brooks, Vice President of Investor Relations at EVgo. 

As the speakers mention, EV charging stations like this one are critical to meet climate goals and increase assess to charging stations in urban areas, especially where residents often do not have a driveway or garage. Pennsylvania has a climate objective to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2025 and 80% by 2050. Driving PA Forward has supported 52 DC fast charging plugs in 18 locations and 1400 level 2 charging plugs in 400 locations. The program is funded by Pennsylvania’s share of the national settlement from the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal. 

 “An effective transition to electric vehicles requires infrastructure and our work with Wawa allows us to provide ideal locations for customers, particularly in the dense urban area of Philadelphia where many EV drivers may not have access to home chargers,” said Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo in a press release.

Wawa currently offers EV charging at 80 locations across its area locations and surpassed one million EV charging sessions in 2021.

The Wawa location includes four charging stalls through two 100 kW fast chargers and one 350 kWh fast charger, capable of simultaneous charging. This was the sixth EVgo charging station at a Wawa location. EVgo is the first charging network to be powered by 100% renewable energy.

“Almost everywhere in the US, any car that’s powered by the grid is more efficient and cleaner than a gas vehicle,” said Will Drier, Policy Manager of the Electrification Coalition.
