Friday Quickie: Fly Direct

Hey readers, have any exciting spring or summer travel plans coming up?

If you’re flying and can manage it financially try to fly direct. Layovers in your itinerary can add miles to your carbon footprint. When you take one flight as opposed to hopping on a few to reach your final destination you’ll help save excess emissions. (Plus, you usually arrive feeling a little less frazzled and your luggage is less likely to go missing.)

When this just isn’t possible – financially or logistically (flying direct internationally is often tough) – be sure to be aware of your impact while vacationing.

  1. This strikes me as having an extremely short-sighted view of one’s carbon footprint. Connecting flights allow airlines to use larger, fuller planes on well-travelled routes, and then use smaller equipment to get people to their final destinations. Surely the overall impact of sending one full widebody from PHL to say, Denver, and then multiple smaller (but still pretty full, with passengers from other origing) planes to San Fran, Salt Lake City, and Phoenix is less than if all the PHL passengers took separate, partially-filled direct flights to their smaller-market destinations, as did all the Salt Lake-bound passengers from Houston. Air travel is inherently a high-impact choice, but the airlines have strong economic incentives (fuel costs) to fly as efficiently as possible for their entire passenger base.

  2. Very interesting point, Thomas! I was once scheduled on a flight that was ‘rebooked’ later due to not enough people being on board.

Have you seen any articles on this? I’m not an expert on how much more fuel/etc it takes for different sizes.

And obviously, always offset your flights with Terrapass! 🙂

    Anyone else have any insights?
