Friday Quickie: Don’t Reheat Your Containers

plastic takeout containers - avoid heating them up!Get snacks from Whole Foods or takeout containers from last weekend’s dinner delivery? Those plastic food containers are handy to store food & other household goods.

As tempting as it is for a quick reheat, put the plastic down! Don’t subject plastic food containers to high temperatures of microwave, dishwasher (nor hot water for washing) OR the hot trunk of a car. Plastic containers are composed of several chemicals, and can leak into your food when getting hot. What’s grosser? Plastic (leaching) has been linked to breast and uterine cancer, an increased risk of miscarriage, and decreased testosterone levels, on top of endangering growing children. (Gross!)

Instead of using plastics to store food, go for tough glass versions (like Pyrex). I’m currently on a mission to phase out plastic from my kitchen. What are you using, readers?

  1. You should make clear that these are very small increases in the very small percentage chances that you’ll get a cancer. So maybe if you had a 1% chance of getting cancer this will add 4% to that making it a 1.04% chance you’ll get cancer. Still good advice you give, but it’s not YOU”LL GET CANCER from this.

  2. Hey Steve – thanks for the comment. We agree, which is why we said has been linked to and have the original source. We strive for healthy alternatives and want to minimize any chances. Hope this helps and we can educate about more sustainable choices.

  3. Thanks for the reminder…I’ve been lazy with that. I pick up different size mason jars for storing food, also look out for glass pyrex at Marshalls, but it’s still expensive most of the time.
