Fat Today, Repent Tomorrow. 40 Day Challenge.

40 days green challengeToday is the infamous Fat Tuesday, where we gorge ourselves with Jambalaya, Muffalettas, King cake and beignets. And obviously, we guzzle lots of booze in the New Orleans tradition. This day traditionally prepares Christians to start their Lenten season on Ash Wednesday, where they make major sacrifices like no meat on Fridays. (Huge, I know!)

Regardless if you’re Catholic, Jewish or Buddhist, you can create a challenge yourself for a more sustainable behavior for 40 days.

“What can I do?”, I hear you ask. (Yes, I can hear your thoughts readers! But not always, which is why we encourage comments.) Perhaps try going plastic-free like Beth Terry for 40 days, and avoid all plastic products. Or you can try going Meat-free for 40 days like Drexel Sierra Student Coalition President Nicole Koedyker, who’s admiringly pushing for greener changes at the local university.

Do you drive to work when you have public transit options? Ditch the car for 40 days.

My challenge? I had to brainstorm a few options since I’ve changed many of my ‘less green’ habits in my green adventure and went “locavore only” for 40 days last year. Taking some inspiration from a woman I met at Wordcamp Philly last Fall, I decided that I will try to spend at least 20 minutes outside every day, no matter the weather, for 40 days. Why am I going to risk standing in the rain? Studies show that a daily dose of nature can boost your mood, energy and vitality. I’ll share occasional updates about my progress right here on Green Philly Blog, or on Twitter (@greenphillyblog) with the hashtag #40Days.

Readers, do you have any green challenges or “sacrifices” for 40 days planned? What are you challenging yourself with?
