Spring Produce

It finally feels like spring! The warmer weather has my body craving seasonal fruits and veggies that feel like a treat after the long winter.

You really can get delicious produce in the Philadelphia region that doesn’t have a ridiculous carbon footprint. (New Jersey tomatoes anyone? )

Here’s some of what’s in season in the Northeast for Spring:

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Beets
  • Baby carrots. Authentic baby carrots (not the chopped kind bagged and marketed as so) come into season in late Spring and early Summer
  • Cherries – look for bing and rainer
  • Garlic scrapes. I just learned what these were when they arrived in my CSA box last year. Garlic scrapes are the curly stem and blossom of the garlic plant. They last for months when stored properly in cool temperatures!
  • Kiwis
  • Leeks
  • Mint
  • Navel Oranges
  • Parsley
  • Radishes
  • Spinach and most leafy greens
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet Onions
  • Turnips – they seem to have a reputation as a boring vegetable, but they are a nice alternative to potatoes.

Check out what produce we recommend you buy organic and when it might be OK not to.
