Locavore Bucket List: 5 Local Snacks You MUST Try

Snacks are what get many of us through the day. Why bother with processed junk when there are so many delicious and local choices?!

Since last month’s Philly Farm and Food Fest was the epicenter of all local delights, it only makes sense that this list would be inspired by their exhibitors. Get ready to get hungry.

5 Local Snacks you must try

1. Brine Street Picklery: All pickles were not created equal. What began as a love for pickles and experimentation soon turned into a full-fledged picklery based out of a lab on Brine Street. The picklery uses many local and seasonal ingredients, including anything from dill, to Thai chilis, to a special spice blend. Make sure to try the Zing Beans, their original pickled green beans.

2. Popped Culture: If popcorn is your idea of an afternoon munch, you have to try Popped Culture. Not only are their flavors incomparable, but you’re helping a social cause while you’re eating.

This company pairs at-risk high school students with college-age mentors to help get a better grasp on higher education and business. Warning: the popcorn is incredibly addicting, and you may eat the entire bag in one sitting.

3. Weckerley’s Ice Cream – Okay, maybe ice cream isn’t the most traditional snack, but I feel that it qualifies. Weckerly’s is doing ice cream the right way. Their cream comes from a local farm where the cows are grass-fed, and their flavors are inspired by the changing seasons -with ingredients as fresh as it gets.

When you visit the shop, you can see them hand making the cones right in front of you. Sweet!

4. Éclat Chocolate – Whether you’re gifting to a friend or treating yourself, chocolates can be the perfect pick-me-up. Christopher Curtin, Master Chocolatier behind Éclat has traveled the world and learned from the very best to bring the most exquisite, locally made chocolates to West Chester, PA. Don’t worry, if you don’t make it out to the ‘burbs often you can still order online!

5. The Wayfare Baker – Sometimes, all you knead is bread. The Wayfare Baker produces artisanal bread and pastries out of their home base in Bethlehem, PA.

John Glagola is the owner and founder of The Wayfare Baker and has spent many years learning the old world style of crafting from bread baking legends like Richard Bourdon. It has clearly paid off.
