This year is the fifth year that the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service are partnering with the Philadelphia Marathon to host Waste Watchers, a sustainability initiative to divert waste from landfills. Waste Watchers volunteers educate race attendees about recycling and composting while also helping the Marathon achieve maximum waste diversion from landfills. At the Start/Finish area, Waste Watcher volunteers help event-goers sort their trash, compost, and recycling into the right containers.
Last year, 88% of the waste generated at the Marathon was reused, recycled, or composted. We’d like to beat that this year, but the program wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our volunteers.
We’re looking for volunteers for the following shift times and locations:
Saturday, November 21 – 8K and Kids Fun Run
6:30am – 12pm @ Start/Finish area (22nd St and the Ben Franklin Parkway)
6:30am – 10:30am @ Mile 3 Water Stop (MLK and Sweetbriar)
Sunday, November 22 – Philadelphia Full and Half Marathon
6am – 10am @ Start/Finish
9am – 1:30pm @ Start/Finish
12:30pm – 3:30 pm @ Start/Finish
Individuals can sign up to volunteer here, or you get in touch with me at [email protected] for assistance signing up as a group.
Thanks for considering this opportunity, and I look forward to hearing from you!
