This November, Philadelphia’s Office of Sustainability is partnering with the Philadelphia Marathon to host Waste Watchers, a sustainability initiative to keep waste out of the landfill. Waste Watchers volunteers educate race attendees about recycling and composting while also helping the Marathon achieve maximum waste diversion from landfills. At the Start/Finish area, Waste Watcher volunteers help event-goers sort their trash, compost, and recycling into the right containers.
Last year, Waste Watchers volunteers allowed us to reuse, recycle, or compost 90% of the waste generated at the Marathon. We’d like to beat that this year, but the program wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our volunteers.
Register here to be a Waste Watcher! Sort by “Job” at the top or scroll through the days and times to find the shifts labeled “Waste Watchers. Waste Watchers shifts are available on both days of race weekend:
Half Marathon, Rothman 8K, and Kids Fun Run
Saturday, November 19th
Full Marathon
Sunday, November 20th
Once you’ve selected your shift(s), fill in the rest of the form and click “sign up to volunteer.” We shortened the shifts this year, so if you are a die-hard Waste Watcher, feel free to sign up for multiple, overlapping shifts!
We’ll be in touch with you in the days and weeks leading up to the Marathon with everything you need to know. For other comments or questions, please email [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you on race weekend!
