May Program — Incineration: Why Philly Needs to Stop Sending Our Trash to Chester

May 19th 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Chester, Pennsylvania has long been known as one of the nation’s worst cases of environmental racism. This small city just southwest of Philadelphia hosts the nation’s largest trash incinerator, a sewage waste facility and sludge incinerator, a paper mill that burns coal waste and petroleum coke, numerous chemical plants, toxic waste sites, and much more. The Covanta incinerator burns up to 3,510 tons of trash per day, only about 1.5% of which is from the City of Chester. The majority of trash comes from Philadelphia and Delaware County. Trash incineration is the most expensive and polluting way to manage waste or to make energy, and it spreads toxic chemicals and ash into the groundwater and air, putting nearby communities at constant risk.

Join us for our May 19th Philly Talks Trash program, Incineration: Why Philly Needs to Stop Sending Our Trash to Chester, with area leaders who are fighting the Covanta trash incinerator on a variety of fronts. Mike Ewall, founder of Energy Justice Network will be our featured speaker, followed by panelists Zulene Mayfield, activist and community leader with Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL) and Eileen Flanagan, author and activist leader with Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT).
