Join Open Streets PHL on South Street on September 24 to celebrate Philadelphia’s inaugural open streets event, Philly Free Streets! Invite your friends and share stories by tagging #openstreetsphl.
Philly Free Streets is a new program organized by the City of Philadelphia that was inspired by the excitement over car-free streets during last year’s Pope’s visit, and modeled on the Open Streets programs in effect in over 120 North American cities.
It’s a natural evolution of the City’s existing open streets program on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, established in 1994. The initiative is led by the Managing Director’s Office of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems (oTIS), and is sponsored by SNAP Kitchen, Vea Rewarding Fitness, Philly Powered, AARP, and Open Streets PHL.
The Free Streets route will span all of South Street, stretching from Front Street all the way to the Schuykill River. From there, it jogs up the Schuylkill River Trail to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and on to the streets of Parkside and West Fairmount Park.
Invite your friends and neighbors to experience some familiar streets in a new way, get some exercise, and take advantage of all the free, family-friendly fitness activities and educational programming the City has planned.
Bring your bike, walking shoes, roller skates, kids, dogs, friends, parents, and neighbors. We can’t wait to see all of you out on the streets on the 24th.
