Introduction to Book Binding Workshop at United By Blue

Join this month’s First Friday artist, Gabby Smarr, and United By Blue for an exciting workshop that will teach you the skills you need to begin binding your own books. This introduction to book binding techniques is an excellent class for anyone looking to start making books and for those who have made books before and are looking for some new ideas or processes. The class will cover a basic accordion style book with a wrap around paper cover, a window book with a wrap around or hard back cover, and various versions of altered accordion books including pockets, flag books, and alternative folds.

An accordion book is an extended fold in one sheet of paper that leaves the book open to look at as one long piece, or individually as pages. A great book to begin with and use with artwork that you may not want to split into individual book spreads. The accordion book may also be manipulated and altered to bring more elements into the simple design by adding pamphlets, pockets, cutouts, and flags.

Window book:

A window book uses an accordion spine and folded pages to allow the maker to include transparencies, objects, windows, pockets, and various other materials in between pages and through to other pages.
