Intro to Permaculture @ Greensgrow West

Registration required. Learn about the basics of permaculture and how to apply them in your own outdoor spaces with our expert instructor, Ari Rosenberg. Designing your home garden with permaculture principles can make your garden easier to maintain as well as a more productive edible landscape and ecosystem. Once we’ve dipped our toes into the fundamentals, Ari will help you build your own backyard conversion plan, including a personalized perennial fruit and vegetable list, to give you all the knowledge you need to make your garden flourish sustainably.

Permaculture is a holistic approach to sustainability centered on the importance of working with nature. It can take you beyond gardening to a lifestyle of independence and efficiency, permaculture focuses on relationships and their impact rather than individual elements. It sounds great, but how can we integrate these practices into our lives?

To help make the most accurate plan, Ari asks participants to start observing their yards now, particularly noting sunlight hours and how they change throughout the season, any pests or insect sightings, and how water drains (or doesn’t drain) in your yard. Along with these elements, a homemade map and plant history detailing the location of any annual plants in your yard in the past 3-5 years will help inform the best possible plan for your unique space.

Ari Rosenberg is a passionate activist working to create a more just society through community action and organizing. She has been growing food for 15 years in both rural and urban environments. She loves teaching a variety of food & gardening workshops, and works behind the scenes keeping Greensgrow going as our Finance & Ops manager. When not growing, cooking, or preserving food, you can find her biking or running around the city. Yes, at Greensgrow, even our Finance & Ops manager is a farmer.
