Follow the Water: Stream to River to Canal

March 24, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

$25

Join Sandy Sorlien (featured in our winter gallery exhibition, Learn a River’s Name) for a hike from a first-order stream to the Schuylkill River. Sandy will share the history and future of our drinking water as we hike from Smith Run to the 200-year-old ruins of Lock 68 at the upper end of the Manayunk Canal.

We’ll meet in the art gallery at the Schuylkill Center to view Sandy’s work before hitting the trails. The hike is roughly two and a half miles with some steep and challenging sections. After the walk, a shuttle will be available to take us back to the Center. This event is appropriate for ages nine and up.

Members $20; non-members $25
Rain date is Saturday, April 7.

Sandy Sorlien is an environmental photographer and tour guide for Fairmount Water Works, the education center for the Philadelphia Water Department. She has received three fellowships in photography from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and taught photography at the University of the Arts for 12 years. Sandy was born and raised in the Schuylkill River Valley, and lives in Roxborough near the Manayunk Canal. She fell in love with her native river while rowing with Bachelors Barge Club on Boathouse Row. Sandy lectures throughout the watershed about her in-progress book project, Inland: Tracing the Schuylkill Canal from Coal Country to Philadelphiaselections of which are on view in our winter exhibition, Learn a River’s Name.
