Climate change is not just altering the landscape of polar icecaps and the rain forest; it is changing the way our communities look as well. In urban environments like Philadelphia, climate change means increasing environmental threats, health hazards, and dwindling resources. What can be done to prepare our neighborhoods for these changes? Historically, cooperative businesses have been used as a means to stabilize communities through building their resource capacity, empowering community members, and creating self-sufficient economies. Cooperative enterprises are also sites for deepening democratic practices and ways of being with one another that enhance civic engagement in neighborhoods.
