Ride Bikes Car-Free Through Philly on Sept 11th!

Bike Philly 2011, aka YOUR chance to ride car-free on Philly Streets (ahem minus Carrie Denny’s SUV…), is brought to you by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

You can bike car-free for 10 or 20 mile loops, or bike a 35-mile loop (which includes some shared roads.) Routes go through Philly landmarks including Chinatown, Olde City, past the Ben Franklin bridge, the Zoo and other awesome spots.  The 5th annual event supports bicycling & showcases Philadelphia’s bike community.

Thousands of people, from small to tall, participate in the Bicycle Coalition‘s biggest fundraiser – 3500 in 2009 and 2500 in 2010 (in the rain).  They’re def worth supporting – Did I mention the Bike Coalition’s Commuter Challenge saved 116,308.99 pounds of CO2 emissions in just 2 months?!?

The event starts at 8 AM on Sunday, September 11th (please be in line no later than 7:46) and has a Finish Line Festival from 9 AM – 1 PM complete with vendors, music, drinks and food! This year includes a traveling zoo and massages (for a tiny donation.)

Register online on Bike Philly’s Website.  It includes snacks & H20, mechanics to help with your bike, a cheer team, and fun at the finish line! Plus, you’ll help them as they’re STILL trying to complete the Schuylkill River Trail.

Still need reasons to support Bike Philly?

  • Bicycle commuting in Philly is up 151% in last decade.
  • Philly’s #1 for Bike commuting: Twice as many bike commuters in Philly as any other big American city.
  • Center City & South Philly are 2 of the top 25 neighborhoods nation-wide for bike riding.
  • This one’s clothed, unlike the Naked Bike Race
